Like Me If You Can!
On the happiness of being unhappy: In her debut single HAPPY AND I HATE IT, from Lulu Schmidt, sings about the discord which follows us on social media.
Increasing the number of followers without forcing likes; this is a type of training, and Lulu Schmidt makes this into a public workout. She performs her reflections upon social media channels in the style of “M.I.A. meets Superorganism”, together with the rapper Klumzy Tung. The song was co-produced by Shaban (Käpt’n Peng & die Tentakel von Delphi ).
Generally, we all like to stay authentic and not be swayed by trends. However, there’s a reward center in the brain, which responds to hearts and likes. If one presents one’s whole self, rather than only the aspects that one wishes to show – then who is the true self? And what are we to do with the hidden parts which remain?
Nowadays, Instagram and Co. are important mouthpieces for artists. One MUST love them. One can, and should, create a new social media world completely true to the motto: “two realities: buy one, get one free!”. But what should one share there? A picture of permanent happiness and success, whilst secretly hating oneself? We bend our lives to fit into an approved narrative, flirt with the algorithms, and reveal more of ourselves than we are comfortable with. And we become happier every second, whilst in reality the world bleeds. Sounds crazy? It is.
The results of Lulu’s reflections can be heard in “Happy and I hate it”. The song straddles art and pop, calls for both rebellion and courtesy, concompasses polar opposites, embraces all contradictions: it’s (anti) pop with ambition and depth.
Lulu’s first ever Instagram post was used for the album cover.
“Everybody knows it, we ́re robots and we know it – everything ́s recorded – We ́re programmed to ignore it –as long as we ́re rewarded.“
HAPPY AND I HATE IT
I’m happy and I hate it
BiPopularity – come and come and take a look at me
ihm happy and I hate it
2 realities, buy one- get one free
When the reward is hitting the brain –
kicking the vein –
feed me the token – big in the game
(if u) rub it on my ego – then its – hard to COMPLAIN,
with the Main frame – activated –
fame claim infatuated,
- self congratulated, always the same – same:
hitting the brain, kicking the vein,
feed me the token, big in the game-
rub it on my ego – and its, – hard to EXPLAIN,
– rub it on my ego, then its, – hard to COMPLAIN-
self congratulated, happy again
I´M HAPPY AND I HATE IT (CHORUS)
and we forget, that we hate it – forget what we know
proceeding with the show, cause there ain´t no glass ceilings to those needings –
So we keep feeding and feeding,
creating real fake moments, till the robots are bleeding
bleed- lets watch those robots bleeeeed
and im happy and I hate it , happy and I hate it.. and ill be happy and I hate it..
When the reward is hitting the brain – kicking the vein –
feed me the token – big in the game-
rub it on my ego – and its, – hard to EXPLAIN
When you rub it on my ego – its, – hard to COMPLAIN
When you rub it on my ego – then we´re – ALL GOOD AGAIN
Everybody knows it -and everyone ignores it
Robots and we know it -and everyone applauds it
Everybody knows it – Everything´s Recorded
We´re programmed to ignore it- as long as we´re rewarded.
look, look at me now – look, look, look, look at me….- I´m happy and I hate it- bipopularity … 2x
